Are you wondering if your water heater is nearing the end of its life? Sometimes it’s hard to be sure that it’s time to upgrade, so we’ve put together a list of signs that you should replace your old water heater with a new, more efficient model.

Signs You’re Ready for a New Water Heater

Your Water Heater is Getting Old

Most standard water heaters have an expected lifespan of 8-10 years. If your water heater is nearing this age, it’s probably getting to be time for an upgrade. If you have a tankless water heater, its life expectancy is more like 15-20 years.

You Notice Leaking

When a water heater is getting to the point where it should be replaced, it will likely start leaking. If you notice water pooling underneath your hot water tank, you’ve got a leak. Once a water heater begins leaking, you should have it repaired or replaced quickly to prevent having to deal with a total breakdown of the water heater.

You’re Seeing Discoloured Water

If your water has a rusty colour to it, this can be a sign of corrosion in your water tank. Even if your water isn’t visibly rusty, there could be rust inside the water heater. You should check the outside of your water heater for rust regularly. If you find rust forming around the pressure relief valve or the water inlet, it’s likely that your water heater is rusting on the inside as well and it’s time to consider a new water heater.

Noises are Coming from Your Water Heater

If your water heater begins to make loud rumbling noises, you probably have sediment buildup in your tank. Sediment buildup is normal as a water heater ages, but it wears down the tank, results in less efficient running and eventually causes major damage.

You’re Getting Your Water Heater Repaired a Lot

Whether it’s one of the above issues happening over and over again or several of them happening close together, if you find that you’ve suddenly had to get your water heater repaired more frequently than you used to, it’s a sure sign that it’s time to quit throwing away money on a constant stream of repairs and upgrade to a new model.
